Transportes Montejo and Goldhofer a proven partnership for construction plant transportation

Since the Colombian company was founded by Hernán Montejo in 1953 and directed by his son Fernando Montejo, Transportes Montejo has enjoyed continuous growth and has long become an expert operator in the field of international logistics. With facilities in Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Panama and the USA, Transportes Montejo comes 22nd in the current Top 50 of the world’s best heavy and specialized transport companies published by the International Cranes und Specialized Transport magazines. Montejo has always had a strong focus on the quality of the transport equipment they operate.

For its vehicle fleet, the company has mainly invested in transport solutions from the House of Goldhofer, the world market leader for heavy-duty road haulage and oversized cargo transportation. Regular use is made in particular of a Goldhofer workhorse: the PST/SL modular transporter with its highly flexible axle configurations. It is the vehicle of choice for moving large and heavy construction machinery. The transport professionals at Montejo and Goldhofer’s field service personnel have been a successful team for many years now. Together, they perform a thorough analysis of the vehicle configuration and the loading details, making all the adjustments required before taking a final decision.

On the basis of this workflow, Transportes Montejo recently transported a 800 ton PC 8000 hydraulic excavator over 25 kilometers of difficult terrain on the site of the Drummond Mine in La Loma, Colombia. In view of its huge size, an extra-strong ramp was used to load the excavator onto a double-width 16-axle self-propelled combination, which then carried the excavator to its new operating location without a hitch. The extremely robust THP/SL modules with their low deadweight have a high bending moment and are ideal for handling heavy and concentrated loads, e.g. when used with a low bed.

Thanks to these strongpoints, even a 1200 ton P&H 2800 XPC mining excavator was moved quickly and easily using a PST/SL combination with two 360 kW Powerpacks and three Kenworth 6x6 tractors. Fernando Montejo CEO together with Carlos Eduardo Alfonso, Operations Manager of Transportes Montejo: “We finally decided on a triple axle combination comprising 16 Goldhofer PST/SL-E and THP/SL axle lines. Planning the operation alone took five days, with another four days required to handle the operation itself.” The 32 km route included two mountains, each with up to 5 percent gradients, plus the 30 meter long Puente doña Raque. “With the help of the Goldhofer service team we were able to distribute the load of the 2800 XPC on the combination to best effect and complete the journey exactly according to plan,” says a clearly proud Alfonso.
